Long County High School football coaches and players will have the Junior Blue Tide Football Camp on July 7-9, at Smiley Elementary School’s athletic complex.
According to head coach Kyle Wilson, the camp was created to introduce kids who had never played football to the game’s fundamentals.
Camp participants will receive one-on-one instruction from members of the LCHS coaching staff. Some things that will be taught include how to get into a proper stance, a good start and how to play low. However, Wilson said the most important thing is that the coaches try to teach the to “hustle and give 100 percent.”
In addition to coaches working with the kids, players from the Blue Tide football team will also be there to help motivate the younger kids to do their best.
The camp is in its fifth year. Last year, the event drew more than 30 kids who were eager to learn about football.
“The ages are 8 through 13, and the campers are encouraged to wear light-colored clothing and bring cleats with them,” Tide assistant coach Dennis Pattison said.
He said the cost for this year’s camp is $25, which includes a camp T-shirt and snacks each day. Water will be on hand for the campers, but each camper also may bring sports drinks.
According to Pattison, the camp will start at 8:30 each morning and wrap up at noon. Parents can pick up an application for their child at the Long County Board of Education, and if anyone has any questions about the camp, they are encouraged to call Wilson at (912) 424-8197.
