In recent months, third graders in Suzanne Swindell’s class at First Presbyterian Christian Academy have been studying the book “Flat Stanley” and learning about geography.
In the book, a boy named Stanley is so flat his family can fold him up and mail him to places all around the world. The students enthusiastically gathered addresses from around the world to send out “Flat Stanleys” of their own.
As a part of the project, the class had to write letters and make a questionnaire for the sponsoring families who receive one of the Flat Stanleys. When the Stanleys were returned, they were dressed in geographically appropriate clothing, had pictures taken of them at various locations around where they spent their time, and had written journal entries of where they spent their time.
While the Flat Stanleys were traveling the world, the students had various classroom projects they had to complete to prepare for their return. For one of the projects, the students had to complete a report on the state or country where one of the Flat Stanleys spent the week.
“In all, the students had a great time learning about locations in our own country and around the world,” Swindell said.
