ATLANTA (AP) - A Georgia man convicted of murdering a young Savannah debutante is appealing his life prison sentence.

Kevin Huckabee is set to ask the Georgia Supreme Court on Tuesday to overturn his conviction for the murder of Jennifer Ross, a 19-year-old Mercer University student gunned down during a robbery attempt in December 2005.

Huckabee and two others were convicted of the murder, but Huckabee's attorneys say he wasn't involved in the shooting. They say he was "merely present in the car parked near where the others committed the crime."

Prosecutors say he played a key role in the crime, including avoiding police patrols as they drove away.

The slaying sparked a public outcry among Savannah political and business leaders.
