With a split vote, the Midway City Council on Monday increased water and sewer charges to a rate that will mean an average bill of $46.39 for consumers in the city.
Mayor Pro Tem Curtes Roberts voted against the rate hike, but it passed 3-1 with council members Melice Hamilton, Levern Clancy Jr. and Terry Doyle voting in favor. Mayor Dr. Clemontine Washington does not vote except in case of a tie.
Georgia Rural Water Association representative Bill Powell said the city needs to examine its rate structure each year. “You may not need to increase it every year — or you may need two percent, or you may need four,” he said.
Midway’s rates hadn’t been adjusted in six years, even though a city ordinance calls for the council to reconsider rates every two years or as needed.
Because of a state requirement to promote conservation, the per-unit cost of water increases with the amount used. The new rate includes a $13.67 base charge to customers whether any water is used. Notice of the increase will be included on bills that go out after meters are read Monday.
The council will next meet for a planning session at 9 a.m. Monday.
