A Richmond Hill dentist has been shut down by the state following allegations of substance abuse and the mishandling prescriptions for controlled medications.
According to an order of summary suspension from the Georgia Board of Dentistry, the state practicing license for Dr. Alfred B. Roberts III was suspended Friday.
The decision to suspend came during a meeting of the dental board Thursday, in which it found Roberts’ “actions, conduct and condition pose a threat to the public health, safety and welfare” and required “emergency action.”
According to the suspension order, the dental board received information that Roberts has been abusing controlled substances; obtaining controlled substances by writing fraudulent prescriptions in others’ names, including employees; ordering controlled substances through the Internet; and appearing “impaired when interviewed by law enforcement agents” while continuing to see patients.
The suspension is in effect pending a hearing before the state Board of Dentistry and any further proceedings.
It is unclear if Roberts has yet requested an expedited hearing with the board, which must be filed with the Office of State Administrative Hearings in Atlanta.
Calls to Roberts and his attorney were not returned by presstime.
