Gingrich carries Liberty, Long, state

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich carried Liberty and Long counties, as well as the state as a whole in Tuesday's Republican presidential primary, according to preliminary results on file with the secretary of state's office.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting about 9:45, Gingrich drew just over 40 percent of the 1,666 votes cast in Liberty County. In Long County, he got 250 of the 592 votes, or just over 42 percent.
Statewide, Gingrich got 48 percent of the 619,000 votes cast. President Barrack Obama, who was the sole Democrat on the ballot, drew 80,173 votes, including 826 in Liberty County and 84 in Long.
The other major candidates in the Republican race, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, got 471 votes in Liberty County and 114 in Long, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum drew 411 in Liberty and 166 in Long. Statewide, their percentages were 24 and 21, respectively.
