Consumer confidence up a little in November

NEW YORK -- Consumer confidence rose in November amid receding gas prices, but Americans' views on the economy remain the gloomiest in decades as they grapple with massive layoffs, slumping home prices and dwindling retirement funds. The New York-based Conference Board said Tuesday its Consumer Confidence Index now stands at 44.9, up from a revised 38.8 in October. Last month's reading was the lowest since the research group started tracking the index in 1967.

Imperial resumes refining sugar at plant

PORT WENTWORTH - Imperial Sugar's coastal Georgia plant is operating again for the first time since a February explosion killed 14 people and injured dozens more. Company CEO John Sheptor said Wednesday the refinery in Port Wentworth resumed producing liquid sugar earlier this month and on Thursday will receive its first shipment of raw sugar since the explosion nearly 10 months ago.

JCB cutting jobs at Pooler plant

POOLER - JCB Inc., manufacturer of construction equipment, says it will lay off 120 employees at its Pooler plant near Savannah. The company said Thursday the layoffs represent about a quarter of its Pooler work force and that the cuts will take place on Friday.

Foreclosure rate up 25 percent over 2007

MIAMI (AP) _ The number of homeowners caught in the wave of foreclosures in October grew 25 percent nationally over the same month in 2007, data released Thursday showed. More than 279,500 U.S. homes received at least one foreclosure-related notice in October, an increase of 5 percent over September, according to RealtyTrac Inc. One in every 452 housing units received a foreclosure filing, such as a default notice, auction sale notice or bank repossession.
